This page is an attempt to show two things 1) the various boxes that Marx used for its Revolutionary War playsets and 2) a listing of Revolutionary War set made by the Louis Marx Co.

To the best of my efforts, this page provides a complete list of those playsets.  I am sure there are errors, but I have done my best and will make corrections as I can.  I expect that several will be made.  As is, the list has been compiled based on information from many people and publications.  The primary publications that I have studied to document this information and the abbreviations used for them in the list below include
  1. Issues of Plastic Figure and Playset Collector magazine (PFPC),
  2. A listing of Marx playsets published in a special edition of PFPC (PFPC SE), and
  3. Issues of Playset Magazine (PM).
I welcome additional information on the playsets and photos of boxes that are not shown.

I unfortunately own few Marx playset boxes, so most photos shown here have been purloined.  This is a fancy way of saying that they have been taken from other Internet sites.  When I began copying such photos, it was for my own enjoyment, and I did not forsee creating this web page.  I do not recall exactly where I obtained most of them.  However, I have not -- and I stress this -- I have not taken any photos from anyone's personal web site that displays his/her collection or offers them for sale.  I make no profit by displaying the photos here and do so only in an attempt to spread the enjoyment of this hobby.  If you recognize any photos as your own and I failed to request your permission, feel free to instruct me to remove them or to add a credit identifying the photo as yours.  I will be happy to do so.

In many instances, I have added a few brief comments on the playsets.  I plan to do a little more of this in the future.  There are no plans, however, to add playset content lists to this page!  I repeat, none!

Please note that I have made no attempt to correctly size photos of the play set boxes.  The fact that one play set box appears smaller than another in the photos below does not indicate that it is actually smaller.  With very few exceptions, I do not have information on box sizes.

The small number of playset versions has allowed collectors to pretty well agree upon what versions were manufactured.  As shown below, these include seven 54mm scale sets -- including the Heritage version released in 1972 -- and one miniature version made in Hong Kong.

List of Marx Revolutionary War Playsets

Name:  Revolutionary War Set
Number:  3401  (Series 500)
Year first issued:  1957
Comments
Although similar to #3403 below, this was the smallest of Marx Revolutionary War playsets, but it still included 75 figures, 39 Continental soldiers (in 10 poses) and 36 British (in 6 poses).  This and Fort Mohawk (see below) were the only Marx playsets to include an American 13-star flag.  Other Revolutionary War sets had the Sons of Liberty flag.

Comments
This is the only set that included the 6-piece Johnny Tremain character set:  Johnny Tremain, Paul Revere, James Otis, Cilia, Rab Silsbee, and Sam Adams.  Otherwise it is almost identical to #3404 below, except it has no Indians.

Name:  Revolutionary War Set
Number:  3404  (Series 1000)
Year first issued:  1957
Comments
This was the largest set issued the initial year, including 36 British soldiers, 39 Continental soldiers, and 14 54mm Indians (no mounted chief figure).  It also included the tin litho tavern, the Sons of Liberty flag, tin litho stone walls, a special Revolutionary War cannon in gold, and a set of the 17-piece Revolutionary War accessories.  Horses were wild west style.  Unlike #3401 and #3402 above, this set also included a second cannon, Fort Apache style.

Year first issued:  1958

Comments
After beginning to believe this set was never released, collector Butch Parker corrected me with photos of his playset box.  I am uncertain of its contents, but would assume it is similar to #3752 below, with perhaps a few less pieces.  Butch reports that it included the blockhouse with "Fort Mohawk" heat-stamped on it in yellow, as mentioned in comments for the Fort Mohawk playset below.

This may have been the playset that introduced Marx' attractive 2-story blockhouse, later used in several wild west sets and the 1959 Revolutionary War Set #3408 below.  The blockhouse replaced the tin litho tavern and has the name "Fort Mohawkk" heat stamped on it in yellow.  According to an article in Toy Soldiers and Collectibles magazine Issue 3, the set included a "rich chocolate brown" Fort Apache-style stockade with nine walls and a gate with no name overhead.  The set included British and Continental soldiers (no mounted Continental), as well 54mm Indians in a flat yellow color, including the mounted chief and a running Indian horse.  It also had the Revolutionary War gold cannon, and the 13-star flag.  (Note that an Ebay seller stated the stockade included was the smaller Jungle style gate and walls, as used in set #3408 below.)

Like Fort Mohawk above, this playset had the 2-story plastic blockhouse and the jungle-style fort, but also included two small tin litho cabins.  This was the only set to include this style of cabin, which have chimneys placed in the center of the roofs.  Figures were reduced to 24 Continental (none mounted) and 24 British soldiers, and wild west horses were replaced by U.S. Cavalry horses.  The set lacked any flag or gold cannon, but included two Fort Apache style cannons. one black and one silver.

Name:  Miniature Revolutionary War Play Set
Number:  unknown
Year first issued:  1964
Comments
This miniature set included poses copied from the 60mm Warriors of the World figures, downsized to about 1-1/4 inches tall.  It included four cannons, a 4-horse limber and cassion, and two "destroyed" cabins.  According to PM 39, it included only one horse...for the Paul Revere figure.

Name:  Heritage Sons of Liberty
Number:  4170
Year first issued:  1972
Comments
After a dozen years in storage, the Revolutionary War molds were revived for the Heritage playset.  Contents were largely the same as the 1950s' versions, with the tin litho tavern, Sons of Liberty flag, and gold cannon.  However, the tin litho stone walls were replaced with low plastic walls (borrowed from Flintstone playsets!), and new stands of trees (four connected trees that could be divided into two halves) replaced the older style trees.  Horses were the U.S. Cavalry style.
